The Oginskiai Cultural History Museum of Rietavas is one of the latest established in Lithuania. It is established in the remained and rebuilt building of the manor house of the Dukes Oginskiai of Rietavas – the Music School (1874–1903) of the Duke Bogdanas Oginskis (1848–1909).

Oginskiai family history in Rietavas began in 1763 through the noble marriage when Trakai voivode Tadas Pranciškus Oginskis married Kristupas Tiškevičius widow Jadvyga Zaluska. Subsequently governors of Rietavas became statesman, composer Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis (1765–1833), his son Irenejus Kleopas Oginskis, grandson Bogdanas Oginskis. Oginksiai governed in Rietavas till the beginning of the 20th c.

In the recent years museum has done a great job researching Oginskiai life and work in Rietavas as they are preparing for the 250th birth anniversary of Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis.

Although at the beginning of the 20th c. the manor house of Rietavas was destroyed, the Dukes Oginskiai left distinct traces in this region. For many years museum was collecting information about Oginskiai input to the history of Lithuania and a rich collection of documents and photos was accumulated.

Photos from the collection of the Oginskiai Cultural History Museum of Rietavas are displayed in this virtual exhibition. In many of them – the crumbling manor house of Rietavas, governors of this manor, musicians of manor orchestra, employees – are captured.
